MEDIA RELEASE OPENING RECEPTION
This exhibition features Kwikwetlem First Nation cultural objects and regalia, contemporary and archival documentation and contemporary Coast Salish art, including works by Jody Broomfield (Squamish), Darren Blaney (Homalco), Darlene Gait (Esquimalt), Fred Hulbert (Kwikwetlem) and Chrystal Sparrow (Musqueam). It explores the importance of the salmon in Coast Salish culture, including Kwikwetlem First Nation’s efforts to return sockeye to the Coquitlam Lake and River. It will also showcase the band’s other initiatives to renew their cultural practices, including a canoe building project featured in the film Te Sleq’alquels te Slexwelh, “The Journey of the Canoe.” This is the first public exhibition focused on Kwikwetlem First Nation.
